Hey, don't worry. At least I'm happy that you said it because it gave me a chance to talk about fanfiction. We need more discussion around here.
oh its cool
don't worry, the world of fanfiction can be rather complicated at times, *controversial* lol.
And that thing about having a backstory for a character, is very true, even if I didn't go into their past in the story, or maybe not into depth, I always have reasons for why they are a certain way, have certain attitudes and beliefs, you know? Anyone who has read my story knows that my gypsy character Nadira, has a crazy past, and it's totally reflected in her character, it's very much a part of her even if it's not discussed.
You're right VampireNoami, we do need 2 talk more about fanfiction here! p.s.. *very sweetly* u gotsta read ma chap:D...after all, the "end"
is near....

From what I've seen Disney's attitude toward fanfiction is kind of like "don't ask, don't tell".
They don't really care that much if people write it (and they don't go looking for it for fear of getting influenced), but if you came to them and asked permission they would have to say no. So it's not really a fair comparrison, because we *know* they're okay with it and it's not possible to ask them.

If the answer is no then maybe just maybe you rethink publishing fan fiction. After all if you don't think discliamer is enough for why should it be differnt for walt Disney. If any boady watned to steal my charecters, I be happy. But Just that's Just becuase me and my OCC's are't on good terms. Theyre etheier pisse becuase I made them too Mary Sue or they have grown Imapainet with me for not haven written them in a story yet.
I see your point, but I think it's a little different. If you write an OOC and bad story about Jasmine, everyone knows that you didn't capture her personality and that your fic isn't that good. If you write a similar fic about someone else's OC, the readers have a much harder time understanding that you're portraying the characters in a wrong way. If they're not familiar with the original author's work, they won't even notice that and will get a wrong impression of the character.
I agree with Calluna about the backstory issue. I have backstory for my OCs, even though most of it doesn't appear in my fics. I wouldn't want someone else to write about their past because then people might take a look at the character and say "So, that's what happened to her!".
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a lot easier to bastardize someone's OC than a canon character because the reader is always aware of what is canon. I also think Disney doesn't really care if we use their characters or not (as long as we don't make money) and they probably don't even read fanfiction, but someone who loves fanfiction and has worked hard to create a good OC might feel upset when their character is taken. There's also the fact that no matter what we do with fanfiction and how good it is, Aladdin and cast will always belong to Disney. But if you take someone's OC, write the character well and people start saying "Wow, you're better than the creator!", things can get problematic.
Besides, it's just polite to ask the creator's permission. Contacting Disney about fanfiction would be stupid, but when the creator is another fanfiction author, it takes only a few minutes to write an e-mail and send it.

I've seen this happen before, where this one girl liked another girl's character so much that she wrote a backstory for her, and the original author was upset because she was actually writing the backstory for that character at that same time and was worried that the other girl's version would be confused with hers. If she'd just taken the time to talk to her about it first she could have avoided the misunderstanding...

There is a difference between asking and getting permission to use someone's characters and just using their characters without notification, even while stating that they do not own them in the disclaimer. the whole idea for using someone else's character is because they, their personality, etc,has a role in a story other than their own. Now the person who own's the character generallyb would want them to be represented properly, and that's where my concerns come in. If someone wants to use my characters, they ask me, and they represent them properly. Borrowing/stealing someone's plot on the other hand...with a dislaimer or without, is stupid.

They didn't steal her characters, they stole her plot. Fanfiction doesn't just *copy* the canon...

I suppose it's acceptable if its just for private enjoyment and isn't released as your own character. Although as fanfic authors, that is what we're doing to disney's characters, but so long as there is a disclaimer, it's all good!
Also, does anyone know what danfrandes was talking about when they mentioned Nadira? Cause I have a character named NAdira, and I want to know what they were talking about!

Some people defend it by saying that we already borrow someone's (in this case, Disney's) characters without permission. However, I don't think that logic works. If I write a fic about Jasmine, everyone knows I didn't create her, but it's so much easier to steal someone's original character.
That said, I actually have written a fic using somene else's Aladdin characters without permission. I just didn't post it anywhere because it was meant for myself and my friend. There is this really cute story we both liked, but we thought the ending didn't work very well, so I rewrote it for our enjoyment. I tried contacting the author for permission, but since I was unable to reach her, nobody else will ever get to read the fic.
And in case someone is wondering, the original fic was "Love's a Bug" by Mica West. I wish she was still in the fandom.

So I can think of at least a dozen other non-crappy fics that would have to come down if I made that a new rule, including a couple of Evi's really old fics, a couple of DP's, and (if I still had it up) my Hakim and Fazal fic.

Isn't it an unwritten rule that you're not supposed to use other fanfic writers' owned characters? I, personally, wouldn't do such a thing.

Now, I don't want to punish you into doing that.
Though, in an attempt to find a shining example of my point, I went to one of her fics and found this disclaimer:
Quote:
I don't own Cassim, Carina, or Hiyahmah. Cassim belongs to Disney. Carina and the town Hiyahmah belong to other fan fiction authors.
Eh, at least she admits it.
