Yeah, I've always wondered that myself. Does sultan rule for a little while after they're married and then step down when he feels they're ready, or does he rule out until he dies? That would be kinda depressing
awww poor old bumbling sultan! Welllll, Jas is 16 and he's pretty old for someoen who has a sixteen year old, just as a generality, right? So he probably would have died, although I don't see why he couldn't be around, and just be really old, maybe he just looks older than he is?

That's a good question.
The first movie kind of implies that Aladdin will be sultan as soon as he marries Jasmine, but they never say anything about that again for the entirety of the series and the sequels, plus I don't think I've ever heard of any country in the entire world that operated like that. Kings don't retire; they're the king until they die (at least officially; someone else might be doing all the work
).
Maybe what Jasmine's line about becoming queen means is that if she
didn't
marry before Sultan died, instead of becoming the ruler herself the kingdom would pass on to the next person in line, and Jasmine wouldn't become queen? Which would also explain why Sultan wanted her to be married before she died so she'd be "taken care of"; if she wasn't queen she'd be at the mercy of whoever became the sultan instead, and they might not want to take care of Jasmine...
Anyway, as for Sultan's age: my personal guess would be that he's in his 60s. On the negative side he's overweight, he's living in a time when life expectancies were pretty short, and he may have other medical problems. On the plus side though he's got access to the best doctors in Agrabah at a time when Arab doctors were the best in the world, and his son-in-law has a genie who may be able to cure certain health problems magically. So I think there's room to argue; you could have him kick the bucket tomorrow or live to be a hundred and it would be believable either way.

But isn't it usually the case that a King has to die before the next in line is King? I would think Aladdin and Jasmine would still be Prince/Princess until the Sultan dies, but they would pretty much rule... just going to the Sultan for guidance and to ask questions so he can finally just sit back and relax but is still considered King.

Well doesn't Jasmine say something about (to Jafar) how she can't wait to be Queen because then she'll have the power to get rid of him? So I'm guessing she'll be Queen as soon as she's married, therefore she must rule straight away.

If he's still around, I'd say he's long since stepped down and Al and Jas are officially ruling.

Given that people in medieval times didn't live so long, it'd be more realistic to give him the boot at some point, but given that this is Aladdin... heh, anything can happen.
(Maybe he's actually addicted to a brain-damaging life-prolonging substance, which is why he's so old and dingy!
)

So that'd make him eightyish in my story? Hmmm... correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like Arabs live to crazy old ages. Half the population of Agrabah looks over seventy in the first movie =)
I think I'll keep him alive!

I'd say the Sultan could plausibly kick the bucket from natural causes any ol' time you want him to. He appears about sixtyish in the first movie.

Post subject: Would the Sultan be dead by then?
Quick question... if I'm writing a fanfic about Aladdin and Jasmine's son (who's about 19-20 years old in the story) would the Sultan still be around or would he be long dead??
Kinda sad to think about it I know... but I'm just asking cause I have no clue how old he's suppose to be in the movie... with his white hair and "I'm not going to be around forever" quotes. =)
Sorry if this topic has already been debated! I just wanted to ask before I forgot again =)
