Umm what that supposed to mean? Does it matter whether a person is Arabian or not ? There's alot of actors that plays roles of other races that in reality that they are not really. |
Yes, it matters. In my opinion, if you try to pass off, say, an Irishman (even a blond or brunette) for a German, it just looks stupid.*
And in my opinion, casting a European-type as an Arabian would be an insult. The Middle-Eastern facial type has very strong features - deep eyes, full lips, large noses - that, in my opinion, should not be tossed aside in favor of some Euro-blood pretty-face.
*As a general rule, if I refer to someone as "Irish," for example, I'm referring to the country where their ancestors came from, not where they live now. So, if an Arabian couple came to England, produced a child, and while this child would be an English citizen, I'd mentally file him under "Arabian." _________________

And yet that didn't stop them from casting Antonio Banderas as an Arabian missionary in "The Thirteenth Warrior" (I like that movie though for the fact they portray his character as an intelligent and clear-thinking protagonist and also my boy Tony Curran as Weath). _________________

The child would consider himself as an English citizen with Arabian roots and ancestry.
You see, from what I am reading what you are writing. Is that an actor can't play a certain role because he's not a certain race. It's just really sounds biased and closed minded, I think the role should be open to those who want to get that part regardless whether they are Arabian or not. In order for someone to play Al they have to convince the audience to make him believable. If he looks like the part and can act like the part then he should get the part. If you say that matters then Hollywood is wrong in the entertainment business. Because they are given acting roles to the wrong people. In the real word honey, they are giving parts to those who deserve to get it. |

Yes... but my way of thinking is dependant upon appearance, not place of birth. It's just how my brain works.

I don't think you're reading me right, then. I think the role should go to a talented actor who looks like he could actually be the Arabian boy of the story - not someone whose face constantly breaks my suspension of disbelief and makes me remember, "Oh, he's just an actor playing Aladdin."
If they found someone of alternate heritage who actually had the face to pass off as an Arabian, then that'd be fine as well.
Anyhow, if you don't want to go through all the fuss of finding the right face for the role... that's where animation comes in real handy.
Anyway, if you're still not convinced, consider Lord of the Rings. Could you imagine Legolas played by Will Smith? Or Samwise Gamgee played by Johnny Depp? Both are talented actors, but there're just some things they wouldn't work for. _________________

This what you wrote that made me think that way

Jonathan Ahdout still has my vote. He's an Actual Arabian; Stamos is not. |

Which by the way, Stamos is not European he's from Greece which is way .north from Arabia Saying a cetain type would be an insult, is like saying that all the actors who played Aladdin in the Disney Parks and most of AMS wouldn't be right because they are not Arabian.
And you did agree with me saying that if they can find someone that can pass off as an Arabian.
But saying any actor that played a role that reminded you as an character or he's just an actor. You wouldn't be excited to see Kevin Spacey play Lex Luther because he's just an actor? or Brad Pitt does the remake of Lawerence of Arabia?

Of course because they don't fit the profile, of what the book is asking for.
If Lord of the Rings wasn't a book and was a story plot from the screen writer's mind. then it would be possible. Which Johnny Depp is very transformable into any type of character and Will Smith can kick ass. Both are very talented.
|

Generally speaking, Grecians don't look enough like Arabians to pass off. At least, not to me.
Middle Eastern people have a very distinctive look to them - deep-set eyes, thick eyebrows, large noses, full lips, etc. In the Western culture, this look doesn't seem to be considered as attractive as a finer look. (Hence the fascination with people like Johnny Depp?)
I feel that casting someone who doesn't properly portray the Middle-Eastern look would be an insult, as to me it would insinuate that Western standards of beauty should be favored and that the Middle Eastern look Isn't As Attractive.
I still haven't yet been able to form any conclusive evidence, but it seems to me that some Welsh people tend to have stronger features. John Rhys-Davies pulled off playing an Egyptian quite well in Indiana Jones. _________________

Chaim Topol - The man who plays Tevye in the 1971 film version of "Fiddler on the Roof" can be the sultan.
As for Jasmine and Aladdin - You're looking for an actor and an actress who can act and sing and are in their early 20s.
Try casting some good arabic (or persian or jewish) actors too. _________________ "You know I just realized we're short a doctor and a med student"
