|
|
Over the years, Disney princesses have had different infflences on ppl and different roles in films, as well as society at large. They all seem to reflect the time period in which they were made, which makes sense.
The older princesses, like Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty tended to be a bit more... passive. I don't mean this in a bad way, mind you, since I love all of them. I'm just trying to understand their personalities.
Snow White is probably the youngest and cutest, and reminds me of Shirley Temple, who, coincidentally, was a big star at the time.
Cinderella isn't too passive compared to her predesessors. She always seemed to have this quiet dignity, and seemed the type that always keeps her head up. Plus, she didn't just let things happen. She sort of rebelled in her own quiet way.
Sleeping Beauty was another one that tended to be a bit on the passive side, but not to the point where I found her unlikeable. She doesn't bug me that much, in fact I really like her.
The newer princesses are the ones who tended to be rebellious, reflecting the attitudes of women in the 80s and 90s. There a few more of these than there are of the older ones -- our very own Jasmine, Ariel, Pochahontas, Belle, and others. All of them end up disobeying their parents, usually fathers, and falling in love with someone from a different world, a timeless theme that is in many Disney films.
If Disney was still dishing out good films, what do you think princesses' rolls should be now? The same as the old ones, the new ones, or something completely different? |

First off: KNOCK OFF THE REBELLIOUS TEEN GIRLS DISOBEYING THE PARENT ALL THE TIME. I mean, what kind of a message is this to send to our daughters? "Oh, Dad said I can't go out with Mr. Badboy down the street, but I'm sixteen, so I can make my own decisions now, and everything will turn out all right!"
...Never mind that Mr. Badboy is a drug addict of unknown sexual medical character.
See what I'm sayin'?
What girls need to see now is...
-Respect for parents.
-Ladylike manners and behaviors encouraged and paying off in a positive way.
-No matter who you are, you can still act like - and should act like - a lady. (NOT 'no matter who you are, you're a princess.' Bleeargh.)
-That falling for a guy five minutes after meeting him DOESN'T mean you are 'in love' with him.
Note - by 'act like a lady,' I don't mean in a way that puts down 'tomboyish' behavior or encourages dressing in pink frills. By acting like a lady, I refer to handling disappointments and difficult situations with grace, being polite to other people, and getting through a social without making an ass of yourself. _________________

You and Syera make good points.
The Princesses of now should be a combination of both the old school and the Katzenberg-Eisner generation: Confident, self-reliant young women who can also be both hopeful and down-to-earth as well as capable of good judgement. _________________

How about no more princesses at all? Or girls who become princesses when they marry a prince? I'm all for some average heroines. Disney has over-exposed and categorized the six big ones so much, it has overshadowed their other princesses and heroines. I'm tired of princesses. |

Belle fits that slot, no? _________________

Yes, and Cinderella. Even though my fandom is guilty of it as well, the whole "marry royalty or someone in a higher class" thing is getting annoying too. |

I just find it interesting that Jasimne, is the only Disney princess without her very own film! yet she is one of the more popular ones.
Yeah, what about chicks like Meg, from Hercules, I liked her, yet she doesn't get any fame simply because she isn't a princess. I like Mulan, but she isn't a princess either....
What other heroines are there that aren't royalty? _________________

I always LOVED Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame. She was an awesome heroine who, in my opinion, does not get enough credit. |

Esmerleda was awesome!
I remember watching hunch back and getting soooooo scared of frolo, and really upset when esmerelda went with whats his name instead of quasi.
That movie was very mature considering its audience. _________________

Yes, it was. I didn't get the meaning of the song "Hellfire" until I was older, and that is VERY mature content for a Disney film. |

YEah, in fact I have the movie, but sometimes i feel a bit strange and never end up watching it, because it was one of those meaningful but destructive movies!
the kinds where it all sort of narrows down quickly, i can really only watch those movies once. but i think i'll watch agai for old times sake. _________________

It seems to be the more controversy your movie caused, the less exposure you get |

yeah true, but also, sometimes the more controversy the more other people get interested in seeing it! |

Esmerelda, obviously.
Alice.
Wendy.
Mulan.
Belle. (Who, though she was quite spunky, NEVER directily disobeyed her dad. Not once.)
I think that's pretty much all of them. I don't really count Lilo as a Disney Heroine. (Or Angela, for that matter, though she certainly fits some of the stereotypes.)
I never really liked Esmerelda -- she was just too freakin' gorgeous. Meg, on the other hand, I'm quite fond of; she reminds me a lot of myself, and not just because I get her in all of the personality tests.
A heroine should...
*Be kind.
*Definitely respect her parents. I know a girl who has no respect for either her mother or anyone else, and it's not a pretty picture.
*Be covered more than Ariel or Pocahontas and less than the Old Princesses.
*Fall in love with a man her dad could approve.
*Have less-than-overprotective parents. This REALLY bugs me, because it gives the impression that All Dads Are Over-Protective and Your Parents Don't Know Anything Either.
*Have a few. MINOR. flaws.
*Be less-than-beautiful, no matter how you dress her up.
*Have some real human friends.
I'd like it if she would...
*Not live in a medieval/Renissance period.
*Be a REAL tomboy instead of spunky-yet-feminine.
*Bring her boyfriend home to meet her dad.
*Have a normal pet, not one or more talking/exotic/woodland animal companions.
I'm sure I can come up with more, but I think I'll cut this short here. In conclusion, if Disney were still putting out good films... I'd be very, very surprised. _________________ *

I love all the princesses
Some things I liked about Aurora:
1. She was given good looks and a good voice in the movie, but not *everything else* like in the original stories. Her aunts raised her well, which is why sh's such a sweetheart.
2. She never once disrespected her "aunts." Rather than yell at them angrily or disrespect them, she chose to give them the silent treatment. I guess that's still rude to some adults, but whenever my aunt gets mad at me I just *keep my mouth shut* in case I say anything rude.
3. When she came across Philip, she has this classic look on her face like she's about to royally diss him Hot guy or not, he was still a stranger. The only reason she stuck around was because he started singing a familar song.
4. She didn't disclose her name to him or spend any more time after dark with him. she told him to meet her in the cottage in the glen later on.
5. As soon as she got home she told her aunts right away about how happy she was that she met this boy and that she wanted them to meet him too. I can't believe she told them right away *and* was going to introduce him to them!
6. I feel bad for the poor girl because she was never allowed to do anything fun or meet boys, but she never once disrespected her aunts for it. And then she was told she had to marry some prince guy she never met, after somewhat implying to this other boy that she liked him. If I were her, I'd feel so bad about having to hurt his feelings. It's like telling one boy you'd go to the prom with him and then calling him later to tell him that something came up *cough* and you remembered you were going with this other guy.
I also like Jasmine because she's never disrespected her father, silly as he is. ::huggles Sultan::
The only disney princess that I would ever label an air-head is Ariel. However, I excuse her. I mean, this was a girl who was fascinated by forks. She cannot be blamed for her actions.
At least the guy she liked wasn't a traditional bad boy. The only thing that drove her to meet Ursula and become human was when her father blew up all the treasures she's been saving up since all throughout the series, just becasue she was flirting with a statue. That's like if a parent blew up all of some kid's Aladdin collectibles, because they're dreaming about being with aladdin
I'd like to think that mermaids fantasize about the human world the way humans fantasize about the mermaid world. I met this little girl once that pretended she knew a mermaid She even wanted to be a mermaid. I have no clue why she would want to be one, what with all the pollution in today's water and the motorboats and everything
*takes deep breath* that post was long! |
