First off- HEY! if you look at my post right above yours i said i like TGMD! ::cries and feels left out::
Anyway, there was a huge forum up but they took it down -cries- there's a nice wide communty of fans on Deviant i've noticed. And they have a few groups on there for fans.

See, I knew the real thing (my dad is a Greek mythology nut) and it still didn't bother me. The older I got, that's the more I learned none of these stories are how they are supposed to be. It took me years to learn Oliver and Company was Oliver Twist

It's understandable if it's a little kid who doesn't understand what fanfiction really is, but not someone who's been online for awhile.
As with why the original creators don't read fanfics, I'm pretty sure most of the time it's because they're afraid they could be accused of stealing ideas if they ever write anything similar. At least I know that's the case with people who work for Disney, as well as my favorite author Terry Pratchett.

I didn't know it until a commercial that said that it was the story of "Oliver" with a Disney "twist."

I heard that before, too. But I didn't think it was an issue with fanfiction. I know it's why I don't read most fanfiction, though.

Hey, it's just like in The Little Mermaid. My oldest sister told me the story, to refresh my memory, and I was all expecting Ariel to die.
Ah, well. Many of those tales were passed down through word of mouth before they were written down anyway. I guess it's a matter of picking which version you like best.
