The fight with Saluk was a necessary risk, and at that point Cassim had met Aladdin only a few moments ago. On the other hand, Cassim and Aladdin had time to get to know each other before going to the Vanishing Isle, and Aladdin's life had been placed in danger needlessly.
Case 1: It was the smartest thing to do. Cassim
could
have tried something heroic, but chances were good it would have failed miserably. Fighting Saluk was the logical way out.
Case 2: Cassim's own greed placed Aladdin's life in danger.

But Saluk nearly killed him that one time in the Challenge.

Aladdin may be the 'ultimate treasure,' but you have to admit the Hand of Midas is pretty cool, too.
I'd say having Aladdin nearly killed (again) would've been what finally did it for him.

that Cassim realized that Aladdin was actually his ultimate treasure instead of the Hand of Midas? As soon as he saw that Saluk was still alive? Because when Aladdin threw the Hand of Midas back to him, he still seemed happy to get it.
