I found a particularly interesting version of Aladdin today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lBluKRBlNc The cast includes Robert Carradine as Aladdin, Leonard Nimoy as the magician, and James Earl Jones as the narrator/genies. And it gets even better yet - the film is directed by none other than Tim Burton - and it looks like he may have had a hand in designing some of the sets... It's a bit cheesy, but it has some very funny moments.
Okay, some MAJOR mamluk-ing of a thread, but I just found this via wikipedia and youtube.
I just watched it, and I actually really liked it! It is very true to the original telling (while keeping a G rating of course). The casting is very interesting. James Earl Jones is perfect for the role, and I couldn't help but be fond of Robert Carradine's character.
The link provided has been taken down due to copy~right, but if you just search the name of the theatre, someone else has posted it.

Wow, this version is possibly the most accurate I've seen to the original Arabian Nights story. Aladdin's mother exists! There are two genies! The sorcerer and the grand vizier aren't the same person! New lamps for old lamps!
Okay, so Sabrina is a stupid name for an Arabian princess, and so the original story never had the grand vizier himself wanting to marry the princess, but you can't have everything.

Ah, Faerie Tale theater. I loved that series growing up. And one of the few versions that includes the jinn/genie of the ring.

Yes, I remember this show. I was scared of it. Shelly Duvall is scary.
