It's not blatant, and the second was more for the allusion to romance. It's not like Cruella deVille. And there was only one scene with any smoking in TLM (Grimby (I think) 's pipe), but that was played up for laughs based on Ariel's naivete about what a pipe really is; he's not even a main character.
