But that's stupid. How to market Jasmine to girls through the series is what's holding this up? Market it to the boys then if they don't think little girls are going to want it. That's the nice thing about our fandom! We can easily appeal to both sexes! They tried once with the Adventurers Collection in the Disney Store and I haven't seen it since :( Goof Troop got some DVDs, why not us? We were in that block of shows, too D: Or shoot, just release it anyways and let us older fans have it. We're the ones with the money
But the DVD boxed sets *are* marketed to adults, as far as I can tell. I was referring to the comments those Princess Collection DVDs that had Aladdin eps on them got; what they were expecting was something more like this. Maybe they're not selling them to adults *because* they still want to sell them to kids in this other format? I notice the TLM series doesn't have a DVD boxed set either...
I was looking at the credits yesterday for an unrelated reason and apparantly the episode *is* called "More Than a Peacock Princess". Quite a mouthful.
I think it was Gilbert. Maybe he just sounds different because he's older?

Okay, I have two questions.
1. Is peacock princess just a song, or a whole episode? I watched the full song online and I cringed a little bit. But I couldn't find a full ep.
2. Did Gilbert do Iago? His voice was a little bit off to me.

Ah, okay then. Can't say it's
the
most painful song I've heard, but it's definitely pretty schlocky. I'm sure the kiddies'll love it, though. It sounds on par with most of the junk they play on the radio.
The
music
wasn't that bad... until it clicked... "wait, this sounds like a cheap knockoff of
Beyond the Wasteland
."

Oh, I meant the whole two minutes of pain if you haven't seen it all and just saw the clip they were showing

*Listens to the Peacock Princess song*
Well, for what it's supposed to be, it certainly makes the grade.
That is, a peppy song to get the modern female kidlets motivated to do something with their lives.
As a real work of
art
, though, it's an utter failure.
AladdinsGenie - where's this 'full version' of the video you speak of?

Perhaps he was just exuberant after being so high on revenge, c'est possible, n'est pas?

Jafaria: I keep hearing you complaining RoJ is out of character, but what parts are you referring to, exactly, just out of curiosity? Why is it worse than the rest of the series (because I consider it part of the series)? It can't just be because they killed off your favorite character, right?
It's worse than the rest of the series because the rest of the series doesn't have Jafar in it. They never had any problems with Aladdin and Jasmine. They're still the same sappy couple of tricky but good-hearted heroes they always were.
But Jafar? It's nothing I can pin down exactly, but he just doesn't act like himself in the sequel. He certainly doesn't LOOK like himself, for starters. And as fun of a song as "You're Only Second Rate" is, I can't picture the original Jafar being so exuberant. And I really think the preoccupation with getting revenge on Aladdin is pointless. Sure, he'd be pissed at Aladdin. I wouldn't exactly like someone who stuffed ME in a lamp either. But I don't think he would make it his only purpose.
I'm going to be late for work if I keep this up, so
have an LJ entry
in which I rant about the sequel semi-coherently.
Edit: After a lot of thinking, I've decided he isn't quite
out
of character so much as just watered-down. Instead of being the complicated villain he was trying to be in the first movie (as complicated as a stereotypical evil vizier CAN be anyway) he was just a bad genie on a revenge trip. But I really don't have evidence that that's implausible for him, and he doesn't really do anything that would be truly out of character, like turning good, or not manipulating people, or forgetting to do sketchy things to Jasmine. So I'm sorry if I've antagonized people who like the sequel. What it did to his appearance is, however, unforgivable.

If ROJ came out as it is today, especially in comparison to some Disney sequels like, oh, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II or The Little Mermaid II? I'd be thrilled
I'm glad it came out before all the new sequels because they progressively got worse, only once in a while having a good one. Sure the animation looks a lot nicer, but the plots suck. The animation in this new short was nice and while the plot didn't suck...I don't know, they just didn't need to dumb it down so much. I'm just really indifferent about the whole thing.
The animation is never going to be on the same page as the originals; that's a completely different budget, but I give credit for at least trying like they did in Jasmine's story because again, it wasn't bad. I even excuse the 15 million forms the gang has in the series because I know they didn't exactly have a first movie budget to work with while doing this. Being ON MODEL while being animated is a different story, and I think that's what people are referring to.

Those two and Bad Mood Rising. But EotB was the one getting all the comments about it being too scary. Stuff like, "I know it's supposed to teach kids that looks don't matter, but did she have to be so scary?" Miss the point, much?

It's not like Disney has a GOOD track record on keeping Aladdin characters IC, you know. I was just waiting for them to do it to Jasmine.
At least the animation is somewhat more acceptable than...that sequel whose name I do not mention.
This one only burns your soul, not your soul and your eyes.
...and this is another reason I don't want to have a knee-jerk negative reaction: because a lot of the same complaints this new DVD gets are the ones RoJ got, and I love RoJ. If RoJ came out today, exactly the same as it is now, we'd be the ones bitching about it.

But if they're geared towards adults, or at least people old enough to remember them, why they're not releasing Aladdin and TLM is beyond me. I keep thinking it has something to do with the princess collection. You can't really girlify all the episodes cause she's not in all of them
. If they can't find a way to go "HEY LOOK KIDS. A SERIES STARRING JASMINE", they won't do it. But then this is canceled out by TLM series....

It wasn't even the repeating of crap that bothered me (ok, I lie, that did bother me
), it's just that they made her sound SO hyper. She's this bubbly teeny bopper and that's clearly not Aurora if you've EVER seen the movie. Gah. There wasn't a lick of grace in her at all. She flopped around that entire short going "LALALA I GOT POWER LALALA CHICKENS AND PINK AND YAY
" They didn't even try, and if they did and this is what they got out of Aurora's character from watching the original movie? I'm terrified for any future treatment of anyone else

Yeah, the animation was not movie quality, but one would probably need a big budget for that.
Is it just me, or do they often get the contours of Jasmine's face wrong, when they animate her at any point outside the movie? Its her jawline or something...
I noticed the thing about her talking a bit childishly, but for some reason, I stll think it was more the tone of her voice that annoyed me, the chirpy high quality. I think even if she were to say the same words in her movie voice, she still would have sounded better, but that's just my opinion.
In some ways though, I'm still glad they made it, because correct me if I'm wrong, but both her and Aurora's story were brand new ones...not from any previous series or creation, yes? Well, at least disney cares enough to still create stories for them, that has to count for something, right?
