I think I've read a story like that somewhere... There, several years later she paid a visit to the Sultan, saw Aladdin and realized how she'd been wrong about her choice. I don't remember who wrote this one.

Basically what everyone else already said. (I've won a lot of converts to my position. ) The "tons" line was an exaggeration, I'm sure, but not an outright lie. I think he's gone on dates, kissed other girls, possibly a little further than that, but I really doubt he'd been in love before or had a long-term relationship. I have a feeling he has a lot of exes he's still friends with.
As for what would have caused these not to work? Well, firstly, Aladdin was not really interested in love at that point in his life. ("We'll be rich, live in a palace, and never have any problems at all" - no mention of true love there.) I don't think it was hard for him to get enough food to stay alive at that point, but as far as long-term goals he was a lot more interested in raising himself out of poverty than in finding a wife.
Another potential cause of breakups: Aladdin would either be dating another streetrat like himself or a girl slightly better off than him (daughter of the "working class", possibly middle class). If she was also a streetrat she might not have had the time for a serious relationship either. Not to mention they would worry that if they got married and/or had kids they might no longer be able to get enough food to feed themselves anymore. (I'm sure it's not easy to outrun the guards while pregnant or carrying a baby. ) If the girl was better off than Al those things wouldn't be as much of an issue, but there'd be the added complication of parents or other family members who wouldn't approve of the relationship.

Yeah, that sounds like something I would say. Although now that I think about it more it's not so much that he's a bad liar as that when the series creators want us to know a character is lying they make it really obvious; and the way he's acting there is similar to how other characters have acted when they want us to know something is a lie.
