Okay. A little while ago, Merkal posted a community post about Aladdin's "three" fathers, and followed with a clarification. His clarification explained a long standing confusion for me about some fanfics I've seen about Mozenrath and Aladding being brothers (while interesting, I'm rather glad it didn't go through).
Now, here's my question: where on earth did the idea that Mirage and Mozenrath were related come from?
Also, I could have sworn there was an article somewhere that was an interview or similar by one of the people on the series crew who was expressing his thoughts about Mozenrath. Does anyone know where that is? I'd like to read it again. _________________ "Hey! What's a seven letter word for hit television show beginning with A?" -- Genie |

I've been wondering about that as well. I guess people just make them related in their fics because they both have strong magic. I've never seen the appeal in this theory, but I've wondered who the writers think Moze's dad is, then. Fasir? Now that would be something I'd like to read. _________________ "Now nothing will stand in the way of DOING THE DISHES!" |

That theory went around in the AML days but from who exactly it comes from is unknown to me. I know that someone opted the idea that Mirage and Mozenrath were related. Mirage was once human and sometime after she gave birth to a boy she got cursed.
It could very well come from Wendy Lee I remember she wrote "dark" Mozenrath fiction in the pre-AML days. She ran The Ultimate Mozenrath site for a few years until it eventually was abandoned and now it's gone.
Her stories are still here at AC and Fanfiction.net |

I think it came from Wendy, but but that was before my time so I'm not 100% sure. The earliest reference to it I saw was in one of her fics, My Enemy's Keeper, and that's dated 1995. Even the UMS only started in 1997... I think they may have had a Mozenrath messageboard or chatroom or something back then, so either they all collectively came up with that theory or everyone else just copied her (it was a small enough fandom that everyone could write in the same collective universe).
And then after that community collapsed later fans came along and saw all the fics where Mirage was his mother and assumed it was just some canon that they'd never heard about, and incorporated it into their own stuff. And that's how fanon gets started, kids!

It was at the UMS:

Thanks, archive.org! It's the first link on that page; they actually misspelled his name, it's Schooley, not Shooley. He was a story editor on a lot of the later episodes and one of the writers of KoT IIRC... He may have been a part of that original Mozenrath community that I mentioned before, but he's lurked on a lot of the comms since then.

In Wendy's and a lot of those other early fics they had Jafar as his father, but they didn't really go into that as much. In one of Michael's fics he wrote Fasir as his father. (I think it was "Serpentine"?) _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

Thanks so much for the link, Calluna! This ought to go into the wiki if it hasn't already.

Ah, I see. I can see how something like that becomes fanon. I kinda don't see Jafar as Mozenrath's father, any more than I can see him as Mirage's lover. It doesn't seem to gel with my image of her. I've always thought of Mirage being evil incarnate for at least a century or more. And if she was a mother, most likely it'd be Fasir who's the father.
Thanks for clearing that up. _________________ "Hey! What's a seven letter word for hit television show beginning with A?" -- Genie |
