Yeah the truth would have to be revealed somehow... Might make an interesting fanfic

Yes, it would make a great fic! You've just given me a great idea! Thanks! If you don't mind my using it?

This is only tangentially related, but it's been bugging me lately: if Jasmine had succeeded in running away, who would have been next in line for the throne?

Lines of succession didn't exactly work the same way in medieval Arabia as they did in other parts of the world. By which I mean they were hardly there at all.

If a ruler had sons, it's usually a fair guess to assume that one of the sons will take power. But you can't even always assume that one will, and you can't assume it will be the oldest. If a ruler didn't have sons, there usually wasn't very much fuss about it; the rest of the court, or the religious establishment, would find a brother or cousin or nephew of the ruler to install instead. If he didn't have any qualified family at all, it would be a long shot, but somewhat legitimate, for an official to at least temporarily take over.

In Agrabah, this presents us with a problem: Agrabah has the most underpopulated palace ever. So if Jasmine was absent and the sultan died--or even if the sultan died before Jasmine got married--basically only Jafar would be around to do anything. Knowing Jafar, if the sultan had male relatives he would probably attempt to find one that was easily manipulated and install him. It sounds more difficult than just seizing the kingdom himself, but it's actually easier, because if he seized it himself the sultan's relatives would probably start a war against him. Wars of succession happened all over the place in medieval Arabia.

From what I remember of the Ottoman succession line, whoever was up for consideration and didn't die on their way to get crowned first got the throne because that's the real fun part about the succession lines - seeing who comes out the melee as winner Laughing

But then they started getting paranoid and locked away/killed their brothers and people close to the throne to make sure they weren't overthroned. Good stuff.

I think that started with Selim the Grim, but it could have been before. But I think that Selim killed his father. Or he abdicated.

In the Ottoman empire, they also killed their younger brothers, and if any of the girls were pregnant, they would drown them, just in case they might have a boy. That way, no one has any claim to the throne. Killing them was supposed to be a way to prevent more bloodshed, and any revolts or anything and preserve peace.

The sisters were fine, as they couldn't rule. Stay in the harem, and be married off to the viziers and stuff.

I suppose there were many servants, valets and stuff at the palace, and perhaps even a room for the sultan his viziers to meet to discuss stuff.

Maybe the sultan should abdicate in favor of Aladdin right after KoT.

Well yeah, there are servants in the palace, Jasmine says so, but there don't seem to be any members of the royal family apart from Sultan and Jasmine, or any officials apart from Jafar. Its important-people population is too low, even if its general population isn't. And I don't get it, because there weren't any problems drawing extras on the streets of Agrabah, why couldn't there have been some servant or courtier extras in the palace?

Maybe Genie takes care of everything? Confused

Or maybe they have orders to never be seen, and are always in their headquarters? There was a headquarters for the guards in KoT, where Rasoul says he'll put the good word in for the little people.

A few years ago, I read in a Disney movie fact file book...thing, that that was actually intentional because the palace being that empty is a metaphor for Jasmine, so take that as you will.

Ah yes, heaven forbid we ruin our metaphors with logic.

It's Disney - some suspended belief is required Laughing
