|
|
I just re-watched "Armored and Dangerous" and it's really, really difficult to ignore how technically bad that episode is. Animation gaffes galore, strange sound mixing (example- you can clearly hear Scott Weinger's voice among the screaming Agrabanians at the start of the episode, when Aladdin being out of town is an early plot point), and odd palate choices (like the guard with the periwinkle skin... that's not normal ) make the episode a difficult one to watch.
That being said, I think it has a great story and some great character moments in it. For example, there's stuff on Agrabah's past (and it's not that hard to fit into the history, unlike trying to put the Witches and Amok into the chronology ), we see how far Sultan will go to defend his kingdom, and Rasoul gets a shining hero moment. It's one of my favorite episodes, even though it's very, very difficult to not avert my gaze for all 22-minutes.
My point is, what are some of your favorite "bad" episodes? Bad is entirely subjective, of course, and can pretty much be defined any way you want to define it. A&D, however, does make an excellent poster-child for the word. _________________

The Secret of Dagger Rock is visually weird to me. The facial expressions and how they were animated bothers me for some reason, but the episode itself is great. You could probably say that about a lot of these |

For some reason, I just hate "Much Abu About Something". That's the worst episode for me. They could've come up with something better instead of a dinosaur which they don't acknowledge as a dinosaur but only a "monster". It's an everyone-has-to-save-the-others-at-least-once-and-be-a-hero-hence-one-for-Abu episode.
And I don't like "The Game" too because the "villains" are far too powerful..even Jafar, Mirage, Mozy and other villains avoid confronting the Genie at times, but Ding and Oopo don't even bother. How did they get so magically powerful? Besides, Ding and Oopo get on my nerves for some reason (they're not serious as villains that's why probably) and they irritate and anger me. |

True, "episodes that don't suck in some way" would be a much shorter list. I love this series.

I hate that many animated series aimed at children have to include an obligatory dinosaur episode. Enough is a enough! But, yeah, that episode is weak at best. Iago is stupid, the plot is lame... I haven't watched it in a while, so maybe that's why I can't think of a single way to redeem this episode.
I will agree to hate for "The Game"... probably because I've seen that episode ten millions times on Toon Disney and I haven't gotten over it yet. Did they really have to run it every other freakin' day? _________________

"Never Say Nefir" is slightly boring as in the plot doesn't get "heated up" but the music makes up for it and "A Sultan Worth His Salt" doesn't belong to the Aladdin series characters we *know* because the Sultan is unbelievably brave and agile. |

I wish we could have seen more of the strong, brave Sultan. "A Sultan Worth is Salt" and "Armored and Dangerous" show some great strength of character, but we more often saw things like "Do The Rat Thing's" classic "... there are poor people in Agrabah?" or Sultan's inability to find his way through the palace unescorted. I mean, yeah, it's a big place, but come now.
"The Way We War" is a decent episode for the Sultan, though it re-enforces his awful ability to assess advisers (alliteration ). Of course, that episode is pretty questionable in general (too... many... Odiferan... episodes...), but it is interesting to see Agrabah at war. Even if it is the quickest war ever. _________________

I feel about NSN and "Getting the Bugs Out" kind of the opposite of how I feel about "Armored and Dangerous" - I was indifferent until I realized how good the animation and music were.

This is one of the many reasons "On the Road" is my favorite Aladdin comic; you actually get to see young Sultan leading an army on horseback.
I'm still going with the Sultan-has-some-kind-of-dementia theory, and because of that I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack in the characterization department (some days he has more senior moments than others), but it's still frustrating to see how weak he is in, say, "I Never Mechanism I Didn't Like". (But, then, I don't like how a lot of characters acted in INMIDL...) _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus

Really? I loved SoDR's animation. I thought it was super-fluid and over-expressive, much like the movie. It was definitely a step up from the usual animation IMHO. I finished that episode quite pleased.
The episodes I don't like... I'd say anything with Uncouthma. I thought the episodes were irritating and pointless and boring. I can almost never get through an episode with him in it (but that's just me). I got SO sick of cheese puns. _________________

SoDR was animated by Toon City... definitely not one of the better studios, IMO. I didn't notice so much until I went to cap it, but they go off model a lot.
How about "Stinker Belle"? Most of the plot points are ridiculous, but I still laugh my ass off every time I see it. It's a guilty pleasure. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

The only cheese joke I like is the name General Gouda. It makes me giggle.

You know, I still confuse that episode with "That Stinking Feeling;" I had to look up which was which to respond. Runtar is my favorite part of that episode. He and Zebu are hilarious.
And I have to confess, "Never Say Nefir" is one of my favorite episodes. I think it's hilarious and it's about the only episode I actually like for Nefir (or really, Getzistan). He's a character who overstayed his welcome, imo. _________________

I found the Uncouthma episodes to be some of my least favorite ones as well, especially the first one he appears in ("That Stinking Feeling"). Although there were at least some others that seemed very off to me, although I can't remember off the top of my head. |

Really. Watch...shoot, watch the opening scene at the oasis. Everyone looks so OFF, and it's like that for the whole episode. It's like they're ok for a second, and then go back to being wonky looking
And...I must be the only one who kind of likes the Odiferans . They're not the greatest characters in the world, but I laugh at their weird customs and how they toss the gang around like they're sheets of paper |

I like some random quotes and gags in the Odiferan episodes, but overall, I'm not crazy about them. I don't care for the characters individually.
Iago insulting the Odiferans' intelligence always makes me laugh, though. See:
"We have to tell General Gouda!"
"That'll require single syllable words..."

I care more about seeing what they're going to do because they're so weird , but yeah, as individual ones I don't really have a care one way or another. I just wish they got rid of Bud. He's screwing up time lines |

Oh, the Bud issue. Would "he's on steroids" work as an explaination? _________________
