Belle may have been more a "women" than Jasmine... but Jasmine started the whole thing.

Well, to be technical, it was Ariel who started the movement of the rebellious princesses. Both left their homes and roles as princesses to find "true love". Ariel was a hell of a lot dumber than Jasmine, so I'm certainly not comparing them on that level, but what Jasmine did in the original was far from revolutionary. She did amp up the sex appeal, but her attitude wasn't untreaded ground.

Quote:
Belle also had her downfalls though... she wasn't happy with being trapped... and almost being forced into a marriage she didn't want. *

....What? She *never* would have married Gaston, at least by that point in the film. She was too far devoted to Beast. But, I will concede that she would do it if Gaston held a knife over Maurice's head... as I think Jasmine would have married Jafar if it meant keeping Sultan alive. Duty before personal feelings- that's what Jasmine is driven by.

Quote:
Umm... first of all... Jasmine doesn't wear pink *most of the time*.

I was being sarcastic. Are you that desensitized to me?

All the Disney Princesses are feminine, but some are tougher than others... it's not about how feminine they are... it's about how independent and strong willed they are.

Oh, come on. Look at the stuff Disney says about these women, on boxes, or websites or what not. It's all about how feminine and girlish they are. I mean, the only Mulan doll I've seen has been her in her pretty flower blossom dress from the matchmaker scene. If it was about the person Mulan really is, where's the Ping dolls? *Note: I'm not knocking Mulan's doll, which is lovely, but... I'm trying to make a point*

True, which is why she was above Ariel in many ways. Ariel put her whole city in hazard with what she did.

Umm... yeah, I kinda have a problem with that too... and it makes me mad that don't even sell costumes for Mulan's Ping outfit. Ping dolls would be cool... seeing how Mulan was more of herself when she was Ping.

Jasmine wasn't planning on going back... which would have left the city without an heir to the throne. Hence, the city in hazard.

Lost and Founded Don't worry about it.

Don't get me started on that... because that whole system was really messed up.

If it was "real", Jasmine would have been sent away to marry someone else... the Sultan would have had a son with another woman... and he would marry in Agrabah, not a daughter.

It was a Disney spin on things. Back in that time period, a princess was sent away to marry... and the son ruled their father's country.

But in your defense, you're right... she did leave them in hazard... but it wasn't as big as what Ariel did.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but wasn't that part the same as in the original Arabian Nights story?

That's totally irrelevant to this discussion. If Sultan was as he was in the Arabian Nights, he'd practically be begging Aladdin to sleep with his daughter... and he doesn't exactly do *that* in the movie. Not that Aladdin would object or anything... Laughing

I know it was sorta irrelevant... but I had to get it out there... and I saw this as a chance.

And, I've never read the Arabian Nights... so I couldn't tell you anything about it.

Well, whether it is unrealistic or not has nothing to do with Disney, then. Wink

Of course keep in mind this is a story involving genies and sorcerers and magic carpets. It's not exactly a documentary. Laughing

The princess was set to marry Aladdin at first, but the sultan's vizier talked him out of it. So she was then engaged to the vizier's son until Aladdin and the genie of the lamp scared the crap out of the vizier's son to the point where he called it off. Then Aladdin stepped back in, proved himself worthy by bringing all the stuff the sultan asked for (mirror image of "Prince Ali") and they were wed...and stuff.

As for the the sultan having a son, no clue. Never read that before.

They never mentioned him having one, but I dont' remember if they definitely said he didn't...

I don't think it matters whether he did, if he did, the son obviously died.

My fave princess is Belle, but Jasmine is close second.

Wow, Ariel was stupid.

Oh. Obviously.

This is the Aladdin universe we're talking about! He could have been kidnapped by bandits! Turned into a magical fish! Become the leader of an underground resistance movement! Trapped in a magic coffee grinder! Forced to guard an ancient treasure until the end of time! Ran away to pursue his dream of becoming a fresco artist!
